2021 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon
Puente Alto, Chile
~~~~~~~~~~~
Wine Spectator has reviewed every vintage of this Concha y Toro masterpiece since its 1987 inaugural release. Over the decades it has earned many big scores, but none higher than than the 2021 bottling we bring you today!
Meticulously crafted from hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2021 Don Melchor spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 68% of which were new. Built for the long haul, it is arguably the greatest Don Melchor of all time.
“The 2021 Don Melchor is dark garnet red in the glass. The restrained nose offers pure fruity notes such as blackcurrant with hints of leaves and black tea, refined woody aromas, and gentle touches of plum and red bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s intense with mild juiciness and rounded tannins. The taut palate gradually grows more profound as it develops cedar flavors at the back of the throat before the long, rewarding finish. A wine that is more suggestive than explicit as it slowly envelops you in its different layers. The added freshness brings out the clarity of the fruity flavors. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2041.”
- 97 Points, Vinous - Joaquin Hidalgo (3/2023)
“A remarkable effort that channels the finesse of the vintage with rich, muscular edges, offering a base of graphite and cassis notes that gather around elegant layers of dried rosemary and white pepper. The richly textured core of raspberry and plum flavors show precision and just enough acidity to keep things sailing onto the finish around well-integrated tannins and touches of cocoa. Best from 2026 through 2040. #1 Wine of the Year.”
“Ashy graphite, cassis, iron, blackberries and a hint of cigar box and chocolate. Lots of violets, too. Rich and intense with a full-bodied palate. Showing density and very fine but structured tannins. Long and intense finish with lots of flavors. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. One of the best over the last few years. Drinkable now, but will fledge and hold very well in the next 20 years.”
- 99 Points, James Suckling (2/5/2023)
2020 Terrunyo "Pirque Viejo" Cabernet Sauvignon
Maipo Valley, Chile
~~~~~~~~~~~
Originally planted in the late 1800s, Pirque Viejo Vineyard is located directly across the Maipo River from the iconic Don Melchor Vineyard. In fact, Don Melchor was replanted in the 1970s with cuttings from this site!
Pouring a medium opaque ruby with streaks of garnet, this old-school Cab has classic aromas of dusty black fruits, bell pepper, green tobacco, cedar and grainy earth jumping out of the glass. Soulful and real on the palate, there's an elegant texture and noble tannic frame here that we find only in quality wines from elevated mountain vineyards.
Like a young Pauillac, this tightly wound wine charms with a sweet forwardness and a stern frame. A few hours in the decanter to release the full roundness, generosity and silky softness is an effort well spent. Lovely, serious, impressive and joy-inducing, it earns a 93+ point rating from our tasting team. At today's bonkers 41%-below-release price, the value here is really something special.
“A powerful, savory rendition, with loam and graphite notes joining floral blackberry and toasted sesame flavors, swirling around a rich, concentrated and mouthcoating palate of cassis and plum. Reveals a note of chocolate cordial that rounds out the finish around firm tannins. Drink now through 2033.”
- 93 Points, Wine Spectator (5/31/2023)
“The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Terrunyo hails from Pirque in Maipo Alto and was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, 51% of them new. Dark garnet-red in color. The ripe notes deliver ripe fruit notes such as blackberry and blueberry over a layer of mint. Indulgent and juicy on the palate. The rounded, polished tannins and mild acidity create an expansive feel. The finish is redolent with mild, fruity flavor. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2032.”
- 91 Points, Vinous - Joaquin Hidalgo (3/2023)
“Rich but still fresh for a 2020 cabernet. Spicy blackberries with some dark olives and some chocolate. Dense and generous with firm and nicely chewy tannins. Nicely opulent. Drink or hold.”
