In February, we traveled to California to visit the mighty Jaffurs Wine Cellars. Our mission was to scour their cellar for limited production gems that don't normally make their way to Chicago.

After tasting nearly two dozen wines with head winemaker Marrissa Schoonover, we honed in on a pair of tiny-production bottlings that blew us away. And, we bring them to you today at VERY special prices that allow you to save big.

We kick things off with their 2021 “Bien Nacido” Syrah. Earning 96+ Points from Antonio Galloni, this seductive Syrah is a masterclass in power, balance, and sheer deliciousness. Normally available only at the winery, we snapped up the final few cases and bring them to you today for an absolutely absurd price!

2021 Jaffurs "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Syrah
Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County, California

Dripping with gobs of pure, delicious dark blue and purple fruits, this co-fermented blend of 98% Syrah and 2% Viognier bursts with fresh cut violets and a whiff of black pepper. Mouthwatering acidity keeps things lively, carrying all of the delicious flavors onto the long, lip-smacking finish.

If California were to have vineyard classifications, Bien Nacido Vineyard would be a Grand Cru. Nestled among Pacific sea breezes in the Santa Maria Valley, this historic cool-climate site is a cornerstone for top Syrah in the region. With their 2021 bottling, Jaffurs nailed it!

Earning gushing 96 and 96+ Point reviews from Galloni and Dunnuck, this is VERY special. And, our price is right.

“The 2021 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is a dark, brooding wine. Inky dark fruit, lavender, licorice, chocolate, cloves and sage all caress the palate. A dollop of Viognier and 50% stem inclusion lift the aromatics. The 2021 is fabulous in every way. Most Bien Nacido Syrahs, especially those from colder years and/or with a high percentage of stems, are earthy and peppery, but this has terrific fruit presence. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2036.”

2022 Jaffurs "Stolpman Vineyard" Roussanne
Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara County, California

With vines planted on dramatic limestone and seabed outcroppings, the high-density, dry-farmed, biodynamic Stolpman Vineyard in Ballard Canyon is another candidate for elevated cru status.

Sourced from this unique terroir, the 2022 Jaffurs Roussanne is another exclamation-point wine. Notes of green pear and ripe peach are met with citrus pith, dried white flowers, crushed white pepper, and river stone minerality. The mouthfeel is plump, round, and grippy with a bright streak of acidity providing exquisite balance.

We award this wonderful white an enthusiastic 92+ Points, right in line with these writeups from Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni.

“The 2022 Roussanne Stolpman Vineyard offers a more savory profile, with ripe orchard fruits, toasted bread, blanched almond, and sappy flower nuances. It's beautifully balanced, has a layered, seamless mouthfeel, remarkable purity, and a great finish. It's a terrific example of the variety.”
