What Critics Think

(8/2022) The 2020 Syrah Collines Rhodaniennes from Martin Clerc is made from vines that are now closing in on their twentieth birthdays. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and the 2020 tips the scales listed at 13.5 percent octane. It offers up a fine young nose of black raspberries, smoked venison, black tea, pepper, garrigue and a fine base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, ripe and full-bodied, with a good core and soil undertow, ripe tannins and a long, complex and well-balanced finish. There is just a wisp of backend heat here that suggests the listing at 13.5 percent is a touch optimistic. But, this is a good wine that will drink very well once it has softened up its tannins a bit. Drink between 2027-2042.
